ALEX: EVALUATION: QUESTION 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Now that our film has been completed, we need to distribute it to reach a viewing audience, and more importantly; to reach our target audience.

FILM DISTRIBUTION
A traditional, and most commonly used method to get films out to the public is to have it distributed by an independent film company. As we are UK-based, we could consider:

These independent film companies do not promote films at events, on TV or have film premiers - this is an inexpensive way of distributing. By being distributors, they are quite literally sharing our film. This distribution then needs to gain a Film Exhibitioner: those who present or show our film to gain an audience.
Larger films with higher production values may want to aim for a blockbuster; so their exhibition outlets would be: cinemas, at home (home viewing, DVD/TV/VOD).

The world of cinema is slowing fading away, as many people don't want to travel out to a cinema to pay extortionate prices, just to see a film once. Technology is now playing a major part in the film industry; as a place of advertisement, distribution, feedback and reviews.

As we are as small production company, we are more likely to distribute our film over video-sharing websites as technology is becoming a major part of home/on-the-go viewing. Platforms such as YouTube boast a large audience, and recently allowed independent films to upload their own products. YouTube also hosts a movie rental service for US customers.
Vimeo offers a premium account service. For $60, users can upload unlimited HD videos, multiple channels and no ads. Although this service does cost, you can guarantee that Vimeo will provide the utmost quality for your target audience

If we receive positive feedback on our product, film-specific services such as Netflix could pick us up. Their services have a cult following, with a large percentage of their users being teenagers - perfectly hitting our target audience of 14+ males. However, Netflix is very specific with their choice of film and does favour B-list movies/T.V series over independent film.
